Custom Fasteners from Drawings: how to request a complete quotation
A quotation for custom fasteners depends on more than diameter, length and quantity. Material, mechanical property class, geometry, tolerances and inspection requirements can influence manufacturing feasibility, price and delivery times.
To obtain a technically comparable quotation, it is important to distinguish essential requirements from those that can be defined together with the manufacturer.
What information is needed to quote custom fasteners?
A Request for Quotation (RFQ) should allow the manufacturer to identify the required component without ambiguity.
| Information | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Technical drawing or DIN/ISO standard | Defines the product geometry, dimensions and configuration |
| Material and mechanical property class | Identify the required characteristics and performance, when specified |
| Diameter, thread pitch and threaded length | Define the thread, including non-standard configurations |
| Dimensional tolerances | Identify critical dimensions and requirements to be met |
| Required quantity | Influences the assessment of the manufacturing process and costs |
| Documentation and certificates | Allow the supply to be organized according to the customer's documentation requirements, providing a complete service from the quotation stage |
| Required delivery date | Allows feasibility to be assessed against the customer's needs |
For components manufactured to drawings, it is also important to specify the drawing revision to prevent the quotation from being based on an outdated version.
What missing information can delay a custom fastener quotation?
- Special material requirements not specified. When a project requires a defined mechanical property class or a special steel grade, it is useful to state this explicitly. A material designation alone should not be confused with a universally implied mechanical property class.
- Drawings without clearly defined dimensional requirements. Undefined functional dimensions, special tolerances or additional machining operations may require clarification before a quotation can be prepared.
Why can quantity and delivery requirements affect the price?
In custom fastener manufacturing, the price does not depend solely on raw materials: production setup, manufacturing operations and inspection activities can have different cost implications depending on the required quantity. Urgent delivery may also require different production planning.
Where the project allows it, providing alternative quantities or a flexible delivery window makes it possible to evaluate different commercial proposals.
Modified standard fasteners or fully custom-manufactured components?
A special request may involve modifying one characteristic of a component covered by a DIN/ISO standard, such as a particular length or a custom thread configuration. In other cases, the drawing defines a specific geometry requiring an independent manufacturing feasibility assessment.
Providing the reference standard, where applicable, helps distinguish standard features from customer-specific requirements.
